Radiation from radio transmitters

The authorities, operators and equipment manufacturers have a common responsibility for safeguarding the population in connection with the use of mobile telephones and radio activity in general. It is the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (placed under the Ministry of Health) which possesses the national authority and competence in the field, but it is the telecommunications authorities (The Ministry of Transport and Communications/ The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority) that allocate radio licences in Norway. Therefore, the NPT is concerned that the use of mobile telephones (and radiation from base stations/radio transmitters) should not subject public health to needless risks, and has gathered information about this on this page.

The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority can offer assistance with measurements of base stations. The NPT has a separate section for measuring services which may be contacted if anyone wants to measure radiation where they live or are staying. Initially, the service will apply to base stations in the mobile networks. Johnny Høvik is the contact person for measurements (johnny.hovik@npt.no).
